This is a 1:16 scale model of the Human hand. Each of the 29 bones were carved out of polystyrene blocks and suspended on a rebar frame.
When sculpting and working with my hands i have come across problems with grip strength and other pains. i'm constantly injuring and overusing my hands - one of the most important tools in any humans arsenal.
Sculpting and studying the make-up of such a valuable tool i use everyday has been of great importance to me. It represents the process behind my work and reminds me why i love it .
27 bones in the hand itself are attached to The Radius and Ulna in the forearm.
From an image such as this i created a sketch that i could scale up the dimensions from.
My favourite tools to use for polystyrene carving are a range of hand saws, wire brushes and solid craft knives.
With this sculpture i then sanded the surface smooth and painted it with black acrylic to add shading.
I built a frame with Rebar from which all the bones can be hung.
It can be re-orientated to didsplay the hand in any number of positions or gestures.
Leaving the majority of the polystyrene white was an obvious move, because they are bones... But with any of my polystyrene sculptures, the main purpose of the white is enabling any lighting or projections to clearly pop and light up the surface.
The Hand is currently on display at the bar Valhalla in Wellington.
Being a versatile piece i can set up in different positions, the hand had seen many shows around Wellington and is still available for lease.
Shoutouts to all the people that lent a hand in the creation of this monolith and to anyone whos come to a gig and appreciated it!
